An Introduction to LoL eSports Betting
League of Legends (LoL) is one of the most popular games in electronic sports. Developed and released by Riot Games in 2009, it has come to dominate the electronic sports industry with over 2000 registered leagues in action around the world. Such is the popularity of the game that it has over 10 million follows or Twitch, with more than 100 000 daily active streamers. It is no surprise then that LoL eSports betting is one of the largest markets in Canada.
What is League of Legends?
League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that was developed from a customer map from Warcraft III. A competitive match is played with two teams of five players each. At the start of the game, each player chooses a “champion” from a list of 135 characters. Champions are split into different categories which define their strengths and weaknesses. These include Fighter, Mage, Slayer, Marksman, Controller, Specialist and Tank. With eSports matches, teams can also restrict certain characters from being chosen to make the game more interesting.
How a Match is Played
As with all MOBA games, LoL requires teams to complete a specific task in order to win a match. While there are a number of different maps (game areas) available, a competitive match is almost always played on the Summoner’s Rift. Each team starts out on the opposite side of the map in an area called the “Spawning Pool”. This is also the area that contains the “Nexus” which is a large central structure. A team wins a League of Legends eSports match by destroying their opponents Nexus.
This is not easy to do as the Nexus is protected by protected by physical objects like turrets, as well as minions, opposing teams and neutral monsters. At the start of a match, all Champions are relatively weak and have few skills. Teams can increase their champions abilities by collecting XP points and completing specific tasks. Teams that quickly enhance their Champions skills and strengths can gain an advantage of the competition and make a move on their Nexus.
LoL Betting Options
LoL eSports betting can be as simple or as complicated as you wish to make it. In many ways putting money on a match is much like wagering on football or baseball where you have one team versus another.
For anyone just starting out, match betting is the most popular option. Here you are simply predicting which team will win a particular matchup.
Tournament betting is also popular with LoL leagues and international tournaments. In this case, bets can be placed on which team will win the league or tournament outright at the end of the season. Bets can also be placed on which team will win their group stage, who will make it to the finals and which group the winner will be from.
Within each match, there are also plenty of prop bets that can be placed. Depending on the eSports site, you might find markets where you can be on “first blood”. This is where you are predicting which team will execute the first kill. Map betting is also popular where you predict the outcome of an individual map in a best of 3 or best of five scenarios. Other markets include overtime, total number of kills, over/under and top fragger.
Before You Bet
As with regular sports, putting money down on League of Legends requires in depth knowledge of the game and the teams. It is advisable to play the game yourself and watch matches on Twitch or YouTube to get an understanding of how strategies are formed. LoL eSports betting can be fun and rewarding if you have the right knowledge and a good idea of how teams perform in a specific tournament or league
