Apple’s iOS Gambling App Ban BypassedDavid Burgundy | 25 Jul 2019
Apple’s recent guideline changes for gambling applications has led to many online casino providers being unable to offer their services to Apple device users. A ban on non-native iOS applications came into effect in June this year, and is having a major impact on Pennsylvania’s newly regulated market.
One company, however, has found a way around the issue and become the first company able to offer its betting services to Pennsylvania Apple users.
Company Finds iOS Workaround
Apple's new app guidelines state that HTML5 games in apps are not allowed to provide real money gambling services, lotteries, donations or any form of commerce. Existing apps have until September to develop a native iOS version, however new apps are affected with immediate effect.
This was bad news for Pennsylvania operators, who launched only to find that the mobile apps could not be used by Apple fans. Part of Pennsylvania gambling regulations is that player’s can place bets on mobile devices provided they are in the state. The company apps usually verify a player’s location. With consumers unable to use the apps on their Apple devices that are unable to access the mobile platforms.
To bypass the issue, one company, Rush Street Interactive (RSI) has found a workaround that allows players to access its new casino site, PlaySugarHouse. The app, called GeoGuard, lets players use their location settings to verify their whereabouts and access the site directly through their browser on their iOS mobile device.
The process is simple; users who log onto the site on an iOS device are prompted to download GeoGuard from the app store. The setup process is quick and easy and then the player can enjoy the new online gaming experience.
No Comment from Apple
RSI president Richard Schwartz shared his excitement that the company is able to offer Apple users an avenue to access the company’s innovative games. He went on to say how pleased he is that Apple devices could be used to access the mobile web and play on the new casino site. So, all Pennsylvania players can enjoy the award-winning platform.
So far there has been no response from Apple regarding the workaround, however, opinion is that the company will find a way to shut it down soon. Until then, players will be able to enjoy everything RSI has to offer on its newly launched site.
